Job Purpose

The purpose of a Kyoto Fusioneering (KF) Graduate Fusion Engineer is to support the development and optimization of fusion power plant technologies, focusing on design, analysis, and client engagement within the North American market. This position will have a dual focus. Firstly, it involves aiding KF’s technical leaders in developing actionable plans and technical strategies for the North American fusion energy sector. Secondly, it includes providing the capability for KF to engage in various internal, government or client-led projects, especially those concerning fusion plant technical requirements and the optimization of existing solutions. KF is committed to nurturing the graduate engineer's growth, aiming to enhance their expertise and involvement in significant projects. These projects include areas such as system design optimization, safety analysis, and the integration of advanced technologies, to propel KF’s mission forward in the fusion energy landscape.

Principal Responsibilities  

● Identify and propose strategic market opportunities through industry insights and client feedback. Work with KF leaders to craft actionable plans and technical strategies that ensure KF is meeting the evolving demands of the North American fusion energy sector.

● Serve as a technical liaison to North American clients and fusion leaders, facilitating relationships to broaden KF’s influence and presence in the North American fusion landscape.

● Assist in the development and engineering of tritium-compatible plant systems and fusion thermal power generation systems, focusing on commercial-scale applications.

● Work closely with project partners (internal and external) to define high-level fusion plant technical requirements, conduct Technology Readiness Level (TRL) assessments, and support the strategic planning of project phases.

● Verify equipment design against defined requirements, international codes, and standards, and local regulations, while actively participating in design reviews at various stages to provide technical feedback and ensuring compliance, safety, and project evolution.

● Utilize engineering principles to optimize fusion plant technologies, focusing on mitigating system uncertainties to enhance reliability and performance, while aiming for optimal design outcomes.

● Explore and propose strategic deviations from standard roadmaps to prioritize the commercial viability and rapid deployment of fusion energy solutions, including the development of experimental devices.

● Continuously assess and integrate higher TRL technologies, optimizing the balance of facility systems and components to advance KF’s leadership in fusion plant technology innovation. The graduate engineer must be able to work as part of a team and have the ability to communicate complex challenges to diverse, cross-functional stakeholders. They will work on multidisciplinary problems that have no obvious solutions and require persistence and lateral approaches to solving.

Knowledge, Skills & Experience  

● Master's degree required, Ph.D. desirable in a related science/engineering discipline, with a focus on an applicable engineering discipline (ex. Mechanical, Nuclear, Systems, Chemical, etc. engineer) or a closely related field.

● Experience in fusion engineering or a related technical field, preferably with exposure to fusion energy technology - required.

● Demonstration of strong analytical, problem-solving, and innovative thinking skills - required.

● Ability to work both independently and in a team-oriented, collaborative environment, with flexibility for domestic and international travel to support project requirements - required.

● Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal, to collaborate effectively with cross-functional teams and stakeholders - required.

● Willingness to occasional travel or work during non-standard hours, reflecting Kyoto Fusioneering's diverse time zones.
