About Us
We are a quantum technology startup originating from Yokohama National University in Japan.
Our mission is to develop quantum repeaters that enable long-distance quantum communication and ultimately make the quantum internet a reality.
Through quantum technology, we aim to build a new generation of infrastructure that enables unprecedented levels of communication security and distributed quantum computing by connecting multiple quantum computers.
Our technology is built on more than 20 years of academic research. Today, we are taking that research beyond the laboratory and into the real world, working alongside leading companies such as SoftBank, Toshiba, and Mitsubishi Electric, as well as participating in national research and development projects.
We are also accelerating our global expansion, including the establishment of a subsidiary in Denmark.
Bringing technology that has yet to be realized anywhere in the world from research to reality.
We are now at the forefront of the challenge to build the quantum internet—a new infrastructure that has the potential to transform the future.
Job Description
We are looking for a Research and Development Engineer who will work hands-on alongside our researchers to develop quantum repeaters.
Research and development at LQUOM requires a wide range of technologies, including optics, mechanical engineering, electrical and electronic engineering, control systems, and software development.
You do not need to be an expert in all of these fields to join us.
For example, you may have experience in:
Designing components or systems using CAD
Aligning, adjusting, and optimizing optical systems
Simulating analog circuits
Building electronic devices or experimental equipment
Automating experiments through programming
We welcome candidates who can contribute to our R&D activities by applying their strengths in at least one of these areas.
Working closely with our researchers, you will participate in experiments, design, testing, and iterative improvements. As you gain experience, you will have opportunities to learn related technologies and gradually expand the scope of your responsibilities.
Prior experience in quantum engineering, quantum communication, or optics is not required.
We welcome candidates who are eager to apply their knowledge and skills in physics or engineering to cutting-edge research and development.
Key Responsibilities
Depending on your experience and technical background, you will work closely with our researchers on one or more of the following activities:
Conducting experiments and R&D related to quantum repeaters
Building, adjusting, and evaluating experimental setups and research equipment
Designing mechanical components and mechanisms using CAD
Designing and fabricating experimental equipment, fixtures, and jigs
Building, aligning, and optimizing optical systems
Simulating analog circuits
Assembling electronic circuits, including soldering
Developing control systems and hardware control solutions
Controlling experiments and measurement systems using software
Collecting, organizing, and analyzing experimental data
Selecting components, instruments, and equipment required for R&D
Coordinating with internal procurement teams to source components and equipment
Developing prototypes and experimental devices
Supporting researchers in experiments and R&D activities
Communicating with external companies on technical matters
When technical inquiries arise from external partners, you may also assist in responding to them in consultation with our researchers.
You will not be expected to handle all of these responsibilities independently. Your role will be determined based on your technical strengths, ongoing research projects, and the needs of the team.
Why Join Us?
1. Contribute to Cutting-Edge Research Through Your Existing Expertise
No prior experience in quantum technology research is required.
You can enter the field of quantum repeater development by applying the knowledge and skills you have gained in mechanical engineering, electronics, control systems, software development, optics, or related disciplines.
Work hands-on alongside researchers.
This is not simply an assistant role where you carry out tasks assigned by researchers.
You will actively participate in building experimental setups, conducting experiments, collecting data, identifying problems, and developing improvements.
We value team members who can think independently, contribute ideas, and take an active role in the research and development process.
2. Expand Your Technical Expertise Beyond Your Original Specialization
You are not expected to possess every technical skill when you join.
For example, someone with a background in mechanical design may develop expertise in control systems or electronic circuits, while someone specializing in software may gain hands-on experience with experimental equipment and optical systems.
By collaborating with researchers from different technical backgrounds, you will have opportunities to broaden your skills and explore new areas of engineering and research.
3. Help Turn Research into Real-World Technology
LQUOM is at an exciting stage of transforming years of university research into technologies that can be deployed in the real world.
Beyond fundamental research, you will contribute to building experimental systems, developing prototypes, and turning scientific concepts into functioning technologies.
You will have the opportunity to see research results gradually take shape as real, working systems.
Required Qualifications and Experience
Educational Background or Professional Experience
Candidates should have studied at a technical college, university, graduate school, or equivalent institution, or have relevant professional experience in at least one of the following fields:
Physics / Experimental Physics
Mechanical Engineering / Mechanical Design
Electrical and Electronic Engineering
Control Engineering
Electronics
Software Engineering / Programming
Optics / Laser Technology
Other related fields in physics or engineering
We Are Looking for Candidates Who Can:
Work hands-on in experiments, design, or development
Independently research unfamiliar topics and learn new technical skills
Collaborate and communicate effectively with researchers and engineers
Please note:
A master's or doctoral degree is not required.
Prior research experience in quantum engineering or quantum communication is not required.
Prior research or professional experience in optics is not required.
Preferred Skills and Experience
Experience in any one or more of the following areas would be an advantage:
CAD-based design
Mechanical design and engineering
Optical experiments and optical alignment
Experiments involving lasers
Analog circuit design and simulation
Electronics assembly and soldering
FPGA / DSP
Feedback control systems
Building experimental or testing equipment
Programming using Python or similar languages

Research or experimental experience gained during academic studies
You do not need to meet all of these criteria. We encourage candidates with strengths in any of these areas to apply.
Japanese Language Requirements
This role involves technical communication with Japanese companies, selecting components and equipment through Japanese-language websites, and coordinating internal procurement procedures.
Therefore, candidates are expected to have sufficient Japanese proficiency to read technical documents and websites and communicate at a basic level with internal and external stakeholders.
Ideal Candidate Profile
We are looking for someone who:
Has a genuine interest in research and technology
Enjoys hands-on experimentation and development
Is passionate about engineering, equipment, and building things
Enjoys learning new technologies beyond their primary area of expertise
Is willing to experiment, troubleshoot, and learn through trial and error
Can collaborate and exchange ideas with researchers and engineers
Is excited about developing technologies that have never existed before
Department and Team
Research and Development Department
You will join a team of researchers and engineers working together on the development of quantum repeaters and related technologies.
Training and Career Development
At LQUOM, professional development is primarily supported through on-the-job training (OJT), allowing employees to acquire the knowledge and technical skills required for research and development through practical experience.
In previous hiring cases, even employees who joined after completing doctoral programs have primarily developed their skills through OJT, with training and support tailored to their individual expertise and experience.
Many of our current employees who hold master's degrees are also pursuing doctoral studies at Yokohama National University. As a result, their career paths may differ from those of employees who join the company after completing a master's degree.
Rather than following a standardized training program or fixed career path, we emphasize flexible, individualized career development based on each employee's technical background, strengths, interests, and professional aspirations.
We aim to create an environment where employees can continuously expand their expertise, take on new challenges, and develop their careers in ways that best suit their individual potential.
