About Us
We are a quantum technology startup originating from Yokohama National University in Japan.
Our mission is to develop quantum repeaters that enable long-distance quantum communication and ultimately make the quantum internet a reality.
Through quantum technology, we aim to build a new generation of infrastructure that enables unprecedented levels of communication security and distributed quantum computing by connecting multiple quantum computers.
Our technology is built on more than 20 years of academic research. Today, we are taking that research beyond the laboratory and into the real world, working alongside leading companies such as SoftBank, Toshiba, and Mitsubishi Electric, as well as participating in national research and development projects.
We are also accelerating our global expansion, including the establishment of a subsidiary in Denmark.
Bringing technology that has yet to be realized anywhere in the world from research to reality.
We are now at the forefront of the challenge to build the quantum internet—a new infrastructure that has the potential to transform the future.
Job Description
We are seeking a Research & Development Scientist who can leverage their technical expertise to drive research and development of quantum repeaters and quantum communication systems.
At LQUOM, our R&D challenges cannot be solved within a single discipline. We bring together expertise in optics, mechanical engineering, electrical and electronic engineering, control systems, and software to tackle technological challenges that remain unsolved worldwide.
In this role, you will take ownership of research projects within your area of expertise, independently formulate hypotheses, design and conduct experiments, and drive research forward through continuous testing and validation.
Prior experience in quantum engineering or quantum communication is not required.
We welcome researchers who can apply their expertise in physics, optics, mechanical engineering, electronics, control systems, software, or related fields while actively exploring new disciplines when necessary to advance their research.
Key Research and Development Responsibilities
Depending on your experience and specialization, you will be responsible for one or more of the following areas:
Research and development of optical and quantum optical systems using lasers and related technologies
Development of entangled photon sources and related technologies
Construction, alignment, and performance optimization of optical systems
Laser stabilization and phase synchronization
Research and development of digital and analog control systems
Feedback control systems
Electronics and circuit development
Mechanical and structural design
Miniaturization and modularization of quantum repeaters
Development of hardware control software
Theoretical research on quantum repeater protocols and related technologies
Research into applications of quantum communication technologies
Implementation of research outcomes into prototypes and products
You are not expected to have experience in all of these areas.
We value researchers who bring deep expertise in at least one field and are willing to learn new technologies, work across disciplines, and take on challenges beyond their original specialization to advance research.
Why Join Us?
1. Take on Technological Challenges That Have Yet to Be Solved Worldwide
Quantum repeaters are widely recognized as essential technologies for the future of quantum communication, yet fully functional, practical quantum repeater systems have not been realized.
This is not a role where you simply follow established solutions.
You will formulate hypotheses, design experiments, investigate failures, identify underlying causes, and continuously explore new approaches.
At LQUOM, we offer a research environment for people who find excitement in solving difficult technical problems and exploring the unknown.
2. Continue Your Career as a Hands-On Researcher
Although LQUOM is a company, our R&D environment retains many of the characteristics of an academic research laboratory.
Our researchers actively work with experimental equipment, exchange ideas with colleagues, and conduct hands-on research.
In many companies, career progression often leads researchers toward management responsibilities and away from experimental work.
At LQUOM, you can choose a career path that allows you to remain actively involved in research and experimentation, even as you grow professionally.
3. Work at the Intersection of Academia and Industry
At LQUOM, you can continue engaging in academic activities, including publishing research papers and presenting at conferences, while helping transform research outcomes into technologies that can be deployed in the real world.
If you want to continue pursuing scientific research while also seeing your discoveries become functioning technologies, LQUOM offers an environment that combines the intellectual freedom of academia with the real-world impact of industry.
4. Collaborate Across Multiple Technical Disciplines
Developing quantum repeaters requires expertise extending beyond optics to mechanical engineering, electronics, control systems, software, and other technical fields.
Our researchers and engineers regularly exchange ideas, discuss technical challenges, and combine their specialized knowledge to develop integrated technologies.
You will have opportunities to collaborate across disciplines, broaden your technical perspective, and contribute to complex research challenges that cannot be solved by a single field alone.
Required Qualifications and Experience
Research or R&D Experience
Candidates should have research or R&D experience in at least one of the following fields:
Physics / Experimental Physics
Optics / Laser Technology
Electrical and Electronic Engineering
Mechanical Engineering / Mechanical Design
Control Engineering
Electronics
Software Engineering
Other related fields in physics or engineering
Required Research Capabilities
We particularly value candidates who can:
Independently formulate hypotheses and drive research and development projects
Conduct experiments, design, and analysis with a high degree of autonomy
Proactively learn and incorporate knowledge from disciplines beyond their primary area of expertise when necessary
Please note:
A doctoral degree is not required. We place greater emphasis on your research and development experience and your ability to independently conduct research than on academic qualifications alone.
Prior research experience in quantum engineering or quantum communication is not required.
Preferred Skills and Experience
Experience in any of the following areas would be an advantage:
Ph.D. or equivalent research experience
Optical design
Interferometers and optical cavities
Nonlinear optics
Quantum memory
Photonic crystals
Laser stabilization and phase synchronization
Mechanical system development and assembly
Feedback control systems

Ideal Candidate Profile
We are looking for someone who:
Has a genuine passion for scientific research
Enjoys hands-on experimentation and development
Finds satisfaction in tackling difficult technical challenges through trial and error
Is eager to learn new technologies beyond their primary area of expertise
Can openly exchange ideas, collaborate, and engage in constructive discussions with other researchers and engineers
Wants to translate research findings into functioning technologies, not just academic publications
Is excited about bringing technologies that have yet to be realized anywhere in the world into practical use
