Company Overview

Yaqumo is a quantum computing startup founded on research originating from the Takahashi Laboratory at Kyoto University and the Omori Laboratory at the Institute for Molecular Science (IMS).

Our core technology is based on neutral-atom quantum computing, a promising architecture known for its scalability to large numbers of qubits. While neutral-atom systems offer significant advantages in scalability, challenges remain in areas such as fault tolerance and computational performance. Yaqumo combines the expertise of both research groups to address these challenges.

In 2025, the company secured approximately JPY 700 million in funding and was selected for a major NEDO (New Energy and Industrial Technology Development Organization) program. We are currently developing ytterbium-based quantum gates, control systems, and quantum error correction technologies, with the goal of delivering a prototype fault-tolerant quantum computer by FY2027.

Our long-term vision is to bring neutral-atom quantum computing into practical use and tackle societal challenges that are beyond the capabilities of conventional computing.

Job Summary

Yaqumo is a neutral-atom quantum computing startup founded by researchers from Kyoto University and the Institute for Molecular Science (IMS). We are building a world-class experimental team to deliver our prototype quantum computer by 2027.

In this role, you will work at the frontier of neutral-atom quantum hardware — designing and running experiments in laser cooling, optical tweezers, and Rydberg-based quantum gates. You will join a team competing at the global level and contribute directly to making quantum computing a reality.

Responsibilities

Design and conduct experiments on neutral-atom qubit control and manipulation
Build, align, and optimize laser systems and free-space optical setups
Operate and maintain ultra-high vacuum (UHV) systems
Implement quantum gates and improve gate fidelity
Develop and improve experimental control software
Publish research results and present at international conferences
Collaborate closely with theorists and engineers across the team

Required Qualifications

PhD in experimental physics (AMO physics, quantum optics, precision measurement, or related field), or equivalent hands-on experience
Hands-on experience with laser systems and free-space optics (design, alignment, stabilization)
Practical experience with ultra-high vacuum (UHV) technology
Experience in experimental control and data analysis using Python or equivalent
Track record of peer-reviewed publications or international conference presentations

Preferred Qualifications

Direct experience with cold/neutral atoms, trapped ions, or optical lattices
Experience with Rydberg atom manipulation or optical tweezer arrays
Knowledge of AOM/EOM, RF systems, and low-noise electronics
Experience with FPGA or real-time control systems
Experience in international research environments and English-language publication
Prior experience in a startup or fast-paced R&D environment

Hiring Process

Application Review → First Interview → Second Interview  → Final Interview

  • Depending on the position, candidates may be asked to complete a technical assignment after the first interview.
  • We place a strong emphasis on mutual understanding throughout the hiring process. Depending on the role and evaluation process, additional interviews, informal meetings with team members, or offer discussions may be arranged.
