Company Overview

Yaqumo is a quantum computing startup founded on research originating from the Takahashi Laboratory at Kyoto University and the Omori Laboratory at the Institute for Molecular Science (IMS).

Our core technology is based on neutral-atom quantum computing, a promising architecture known for its scalability to large numbers of qubits. While neutral-atom systems offer significant advantages in scalability, challenges remain in areas such as fault tolerance and computational performance. Yaqumo combines the expertise of both research groups to address these challenges.

In 2025, the company secured approximately JPY 700 million in funding and was selected for a major NEDO (New Energy and Industrial Technology Development Organization) program. We are currently developing ytterbium-based quantum gates, control systems, and quantum error correction technologies, with the goal of delivering a prototype fault-tolerant quantum computer by FY2027.

Our long-term vision is to bring neutral-atom quantum computing into practical use and tackle societal challenges that are beyond the capabilities of conventional computing.

Job Summary

Yaqumo is seeking a researcher with a background in quantum algorithms, able to assess, develop and adapt various algorithms for neutral atom quantum computers. There are many exciting applications of fault-tolerant quantum computers and this role will focus on assessing the viability of various algorithms for upcoming neutral atom devices and realising them on hardware.

This role involves incorporating hardware-aware constraints into the estimation of computational resources necessary for running quantum algorithms on neutral atom devices. This includes algorithm selection, circuit design, and logical resource estimation for application across many high-impact domains. We are looking for candidates to bridge application-level algorithm development to the constraints of hardware, to specify the scale of machine necessary to execute them, and to realise practical quantum advantage.

Responsibilities

  • Identify, design, and evaluate viable quantum algorithms for neutral atom quantum computers.
  • Compare algorithm implementations and identify trade-offs between accuracy, space costs, runtime, and demands of physical hardware.
  • Incorporate hardware-aware constraints to implement algorithms that take advantage of neutral atom capabilities such as long-range connectivity and parallel operations.
  • Evaluate and refine the logical resource costs of distinct fault-tolerance frameworks together with QEC theorists to estimate the full physical cost of algorithms under realistic assumptions.
  • Communicate algorithmic costs and trade-offs, including the scale and requirements of future devices, to both internal technical staff and external audiences.

Required Qualifications

  • PhD or equivalent in Quantum Information, Physics, Computer Science or Mathematics.
  • Strong background in quantum algorithms and working with quantum circuits.
  • Experience with quantum algorithms such as Hamiltonian simulation, quantum chemistry and materials simulation.
  • Experience with resource estimation for fault-tolerant quantum computing with relevant experience in research publication.
  • Ability to communicate algorithmic costs and trade-offs to both internal technical staff and external audiences.
  • Ability to work alongside and collaborate with people across the diverse disciplines of engineering, experimental physics and software.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Familiarity with neutral atom hardware constraints.
  • Familiarity with different frameworks for fault-tolerance and how to evaluate logical gate costs under each framework.
  • Fluency in Japanese

Hiring Process

Application Review → First Interview → Second Interview  → Final Interview

  • Depending on the position, candidates may be asked to complete a technical assignment after the first interview.
  • We place a strong emphasis on mutual understanding throughout the hiring process. Depending on the role and evaluation process, additional interviews, informal meetings with team members, or offer discussions may be arranged.
