Company Overview
Yaqumo is a quantum computing startup founded on research originating from the Takahashi Laboratory at Kyoto University and the Omori Laboratory at the Institute for Molecular Science (IMS).
Our core technology is based on neutral-atom quantum computing, a promising architecture known for its scalability to large numbers of qubits. While neutral-atom systems offer significant advantages in scalability, challenges remain in areas such as fault tolerance and computational performance. Yaqumo combines the expertise of both research groups to address these challenges.
In 2025, the company secured approximately JPY 700 million in funding and was selected for a major NEDO (New Energy and Industrial Technology Development Organization) program. We are currently developing ytterbium-based quantum gates, control systems, and quantum error correction technologies, with the goal of delivering a prototype fault-tolerant quantum computer by FY2027.
Our long-term vision is to bring neutral-atom quantum computing into practical use and tackle societal challenges that are beyond the capabilities of conventional computing.

Job Summary
We are seeking an experienced engineer to lead the design and implementation of the real-time control system for the world's first practical neutral-atom quantum computer.
Responsibilities
- Define requirements, develop specifications, and implement control software that translates physical quantum-gate operations into hardware command sequences
- Design interfaces with lasers, cameras, arbitrary waveform generators (AWGs), spatial light modulators (SLMs), and other hardware components
- Coordinate technical interfaces and align specifications with the quantum physics experimental team and overseas engineers, and maintain related documentation
- Understand and organize the architecture of existing control systems and support integration design for implementation on actual quantum processors
- Manage milestones, provide progress reports, and identify and report project risks
Required Qualifications
Candidates must meet all of the following requirements:
- 5+ years of hands-on experience in systems engineering or control systems integration and technical leadership
- Experience developing control systems using Python, or systems using real-time operating systems (RTOS) / embedded Linux
- Experience defining requirements and preparing interface specifications for systems involving multiple interconnected modules
- Business-level English proficiency for technical communication with global teams
- Ability and willingness to independently learn unfamiliar technical domains by working through technical papers and specifications
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience independently reading and understanding technical papers in English in physics or quantum computing
- Experience collaborating with overseas engineers on engineering projects, including design reviews and specification alignment
- Experience developing or validating high-reliability systems, such as semiconductor manufacturing equipment, precision instruments, medical devices, aerospace systems, power systems, or transportation systems
- Experience collaborating with research and development organizations, including launching proof-of-concept (PoC) projects and defining specifications
Why this role
- A rare opportunity to design and implement a quantum computer control system from 0 to 1, in a development environment with few precedents worldwide
- Work side by side with quantum physicists and have the autonomy to define the boundaries between hardware, software, and theory
- Gain hands-on experience with and help shape the selection of state-of-the-art real-time control frameworks
- Join the development of our first quantum processor prototype and subsequent generations as an early-stage team member
Hiring Process
CV Review → First Interview → Second Interview → Reference Check → Final Interview
- Depending on the position, candidates may be asked to complete a technical assignment after the first interview.
- We place a strong emphasis on mutual understanding throughout the hiring process. Depending on the role and evaluation process, additional interviews, informal meetings with team members, or offer discussions may be arranged.
